Don't waste wood In cold weather, the fire in an open woodburning fireplace actually consumes more energy than it delivers to the house, so more wood is needed to produce the same amount of useful heat. A large volume of air flowing over the fire is heated and discharged out the chimney at roof level. This is a waste of both wood fuel and valuable heat. A modern wood burning stove can achieve operating efficiencies above 70%. It does this by insulating the fire and directing the radiant heat into the room space. Nearly all modern stoves come with a system of air controls which regulate the flow of air through to the chimney. This reduces the heat wasted by ordinary fires and allows the user to control the level of heat in the room. |
